In 17 years of shooting newborns, I trust myself a In 17 years of shooting newborns, I trust myself and no one else, to spot for me when posing. 

I use a 35mm lens on a full frame camera and can stay within arms length at all times. 

I also have a golden rule of ‘eye on, hand off’ which means if I’m watching baby I can lift my hand away to take the shot. 

If I need to look away for any reason, my hand is on baby. So ‘eye off, hand on.’

Only I know what to look for. Only I have learned a baby’s temperament during the session, and only I have an idea of how likely that baby is to startle, to move, to fuss. 

I am the only spotter I trust.
All babies are different, and some love to suckle All babies are different, and some love to suckle themselves to sleep. 

Some need mum, some need a dummy, and some are happy with their own fist. 

As photographers it’s easy to see a rooting baby and try and get them fed. 

But often if you just watch and wait, you’ll see them self soothing, and it’s actually adorable. ❤️
